To create clinical experts in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) for the rapid assessment of the trauma patient. This master’s program is designed to equip emergency physicians, trauma surgeons, critical care specialists, and acute care providers with the advanced knowledge and hands-on skills to perform and interpret FAST exams with a high degree of accuracy, integrate findings into clinical decision-making, and understand its role in the broader context of trauma resuscitation.
Target Audience:
Emergency Medicine Physicians, Trauma Surgeons, Critical Care Physicians, Anesthesiologists, Senior Emergency/Trauma Nurses, Paramedics, and other advanced providers involved in the initial management of trauma patients.
Key Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
Master the core physics and knobology principles specific to trauma sonography.
Demonstrate proficiency in obtaining the standard FAST views: Pericardial, Right Upper Quadrant (RUQ), Left Upper Quadrant (LUQ), and Pelvic.
Recognize and identify sonographic signs of free fluid and hemoperitoneum in each anatomic region.
Understand the extended FAST (eFAST) protocol to assess for pneumothorax and hemothorax.
Differentiate pathologic findings from normal anatomic variants and common pitfalls.
Integrate FAST findings into the ATLS algorithm and clinical management pathways.
Develop a systematic approach to image acquisition, interpretation, and documentation in a high-stakes environment.
Understand the limitations of the FAST exam and its appropriate use in special populations (e.g., pediatric, pregnant patients).
Core Methodology:
This intensive online program uses a proven blended learning model:
Expert-Led Didactic Lectures: Delivered by leading trauma sonographers and intensivists.
Daily Hands-on Simulation Sessions (e.g., 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM IST): The cornerstone of the program. Using high-fidelity ultrasound simulators and/or guided probe manipulation sessions with live models (if applicable), participants will practice and perfect their scanning technique.
Case-Based Scenarios: Review and interpret real-world trauma cases to develop pattern recognition and diagnostic reasoning.
Interactive Assessments: Formative quizzes and a final summative assessment including both a practical skills evaluation and a theoretical exam.
Certification:
Participants will be awarded a Master’s in Clinical Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma (FAST) upon successful completion of all modules and passing the final practical and theoretical assessments.
