Dr. Bishnupriya Dutta is the architect and guardian of The Medicity's research and ethics infrastructure — the framework that transformed a surgical training institute into a Government of India-registered research establishment.
As Chairperson of the Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC), Dr. Bishnupriya Dutta leads the statutory body through which every research protocol, every wet-lab program and every animal-model study at The Medicity is scrutinised, approved and governed in accordance with national regulations. In hands-on surgical education — where skills are rehearsed on tissue and animal models before they ever reach a patient — this responsibility is among the most consequential an institution can hold.
Her work sits at the rare intersection of science, regulation and surgical education: translating the demands of Government oversight into training programs that are rigorous, humane and legally watertight. It is this foundation on which more than 10,000 doctors from over 30 countries have trained at The Medicity with confidence — knowing that every procedure they practise has passed through a formally constituted ethical and scientific review.
With a doctorate in Medicine & Health Sciences and an academic grounding that spans the life sciences, Dr. Dutta brings a systems-level understanding of human health — from the molecular to the clinical — to the design and oversight of the institute's research and training curricula. Under her review, surgical procedures are broken into teachable, measurable steps; rehearsed in the wet lab under approved protocols; and refined through study before being standardised in the institute's fellowship programs.
Led The Medicity's successful registration with CCSEA, Government of India — Registration No. 2252/PO/Rc/L/23/CCSEA (2023) — placing the institute among the select private surgical training centres in India holding a Government-registered large-animal research facility.
Established the Institutional Animal Ethics Committee with its full CCSEA-accepted membership — the statutory committee responsible for the ethical review of every research and training protocol undertaken at the institute.
Oversees the Government-approved animal housing facility, ensuring continuous compliance with CCSEA capacity, procurement and welfare norms — with documented limits, humane practice standards and welfare monitoring embedded into every program.
Serves as the institute's principal interface with the Committee for Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals, Government of India, across successive national review meetings — representing the institute's research agenda at the highest regulatory level.
Research protocols reviewed under her IAEC chairpersonship and approved by CCSEA, Government of India:
A translational study refining single-port gallbladder surgery technique — advancing the frontier of scar-minimising laparoscopic surgery and informing how the procedure's steps are taught.
Research directed at improving fertility-restoring microsurgical technique — strengthening the evidence base behind tubal surgery training at the institute.
Advancing reconstructive urological surgery methodology under formal Government sanction — with defined welfare limits, timelines and scientific oversight.
Dr. Bishnupriya Dutta's conviction is simple and uncompromising: surgical education must be evidence-led, not tradition-led — and the right to train the next generation of surgeons is earned through transparency, rigour and humane practice. Colleagues and trainees know her for an exacting eye, an open door, and a standard that never bends.
Under her stewardship, ethics at The Medicity is not a formality to be cleared but a discipline that shapes how every skill is taught — from the first suture a fellow ties in the wet lab to the live operative cases where careers are transformed.
"Evidence-led, ethically governed, Government-recognised — this is how modern surgical training must be built."
