The fellowship is aimed to complete the specialty training of well-trained general surgeons. Because of its high prevalence and complexity, hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery is considered an important aspect of general surgery training. Nowadays, there is a global lack of general surgeon candidates, as well as limited working hours and surgical exposure, all of which can jeopardise the goals of residency training in HPB surgery. Furthermore, new generations of resident graduates are worried about their lack of independence readiness. We can't get away from this reality, thus it's worth reflecting on in our HPB surgical community.
Patients with benign liver masses, primary liver, bile duct, and gall bladder cancer, management of metastatic cancer to the liver, complex biliary diseases that require reconstruction, such as bile duct injuries sustained during gall bladder surgery and biliary strictures after liver transplantation, straight forward liver transplantation, abdominal organ procurement, and neoplastic and non-neoplastic liver tumours are all evaluated and treated by HPB fellows.
